Transportation 2050

The 30 year financial sustainability framework for San Francisco's transportation system.

The problem

A transit system cannot be run one budget cycle at a time. Revenue, state of good repair, and capital investment pull against each other, and without one framework the short term wins every argument and the long term pays.

What was built

As Chief Strategy Officer, he built Transportation 2050: the long range financial sustainability architecture and capital investment blueprint for the SFMTA, holding three decades of revenue, state of good repair, and capital investment in one framework.

How it was done

Plan in possible futures, not one forecast.

  1. Frame the futures

Pair policy, operations, and capital actions across possible futures, not a single forecast.

  2. Mark every action

Label each action by what it does: raises revenue, sustains it, or cuts cost.

  3. Hold it in one framework

Keep revenue, state of good repair, and capital investment in the same picture, so trade offs are argued in the open.
