A Plan for Planning

His master's project at San José State University, asking what planners are for. He has been answering it ever since.

The problem

A profession that cannot say what it is for will be told what it is for, by everyone else. His master's project put the question plainly, in 2012, and the answer has organized the work since.

What was built

A Plan for Planning, his master's project in Urban and Regional Planning at San José State University. Fourteen years later, its question became the foundation of the Institute's book, The Lost Art of the Plan.

How it was done

What planners are for: the question is the method.

  1. Ask the question

Refuse the inherited answer; make the profession say what it is for.

  2. Answer it in practice

Test the answer against real plans, real budgets, and real cities.

  3. Hand it on

Write the answer down where the next planner can pick it up.
